Glasgow Women’s Aid commends the bravery of Nikita Hand (Nikita Ní Laimhín)

This verdict is a significant step forward and a clear statement to survivors of rape and sexual abuse. Every woman has the right to live free from sexual violence.

It is disappointing that Ireland’s director of public prosecutions chose not pursue criminal charges against McGregor. The civil case has forced Nikita to endure public scrutiny as civil cases do not grant automatic anonymity. We commend the bravery of Nikita to seek justice knowing the case would be public.

The narrative around this case has been distressing and has thrown up questions about how the media and society in general portray women who have suffered sexual violence.

We must do better. We need to be aware of how trauma impacts women and look at attitudes around victims of sexual violence.

Nikita summed it up perfectly:

“I want to show [her daughter] Freya and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served,”
