Cedar (children experiencing domestic abuse recovery) is a groupwork programme for children and mothers who have experienced domestic abuse. We recognise that experience of domestic abuse affects children as well as adults and we work to create a safe environment for children and young people to be able to explore their feelings around this. We strongly believe that mothers are best placed to support their own children in their recovery; we run Cedar mothers’ groups as well as children’s groups so that mothers can also have the opportunity to attend if they want to.
The groups provide an opportunity to explore feelings with an emphasis on providing fun and creative activities that keep children engaged and interacting with each other. It is about creating a safe place for children and their mothers to help each other to find the best strategies to deal with their experiences and rebuild their lives. We are able to provide transport for families and can help with childcare so that mothers can attend groups.
