Glasgow Women's Aid acknowledge the importance of awareness raising work, particularly with young people and children. The attitudes of children and young people shape the future and it is alarming that recent research has identified that young people continue to find certain forms of abusive behaviour acceptable within relationships. (see Research link)
We are aware of how important it is to keep domestic abuse on the political agenda and strive to have domestic abuse recognised as a violation of human rights. Unfortunately, society does not always reinforce our thinking. The mainstreaming of pornography and the easy access to such damaging material on the internet only contributes to the dangerous representation of women in the media. Such representation affects the way in which young girls/women view themselves and the way in which young boys/men view them too.
